Job Description:

General Area of Responsibility:
1. The Deck Hand reports to the Master
2. The Deck Hand contributes so the vessel is always available to be deployed in a safe and efficient manner, as directed by the Master and
always in accordance with HMS policies/procedures and according to local legislation when applicable.
3. To perform all work tasks safely and if in doubt before the work start ask the Master for guidance
4. Propose initiatives for raising the onboard safety level
5. Active participation in safety training like drills onboard
6. To perform operational duties, related to all tasks of the vessel including assisting with salvage jobs, workshop jobs ashore or with
preparing equipment on shore/tow not limited to.
7. To perform maintenance and housekeeping duties on deck, in the engine room or accommodation as instructed by the Master
8. Stand watches such as lookout on the bridge and on deck as required
9. The Deck Hand has the obligation to Stop Work whenever a task is unsafe (by personal judgement) and then inform the Master. Deck
Hands must know the procedure Stop Work that also include the `Take 5`. `Stop Work` and `Take 5` is simplest measures Svitzer have
for crew to prevent personal injuries. Master is responsible for instruction.
10. The Deck Hand must know the procedure Proactive and Near Miss Reporting for the various type of occurrences that should be reported
to the Master with the potential to cause injury, illness, pollution, defects or damage. Master is responsible for instruction.
11. Comply with the regulations of the company safety management system.
12. Induction training of visitors, employees and other persons authorized by SVITZER to access the vessel where a Master, Deck Officer or
Chief Engineer/Engineer is unavailable.

Specific Area of Responsibility:
1. Have a comprehensive knowledge of all safety equipment available on board the tugboat and be aware of their specific locations and
able to use them in emergency situations.
2. Ensure maintenance work is performed according to the scheduled maintenance program as directed by chief officer.
3. Have basic knowledge of towing operations and be able to deal with mooring ropes and towing winches.
4. Take part in all training exercises performed by the tugboat and train to deal with emergency situations.
5. Perform other duties as required by Chief officer/Master. Ensure everything is secure whilst the vessel is at sea.
6. Participate in waste disposal and Follow Ship’s waste management plan and ensure MARPOL standards are met.
7. Participate in good housekeeping in the deck department and the accommodation and in engine room if requested by Master.
8. Keep listening to VHF-radio watch during shift.
9. The Deck Hand must know the procedure Stop Work that also include the `Take 5`. `Stop Work` and `Take 5` is simplest measures

10. Keep inventory of deck stores and supplies, report consumption and new requirements to the Chief officer and bosun
11. The Deck hand reports to the master and chief officer or Bosun Keep them informed about irregularities discovered and action taken to
correct these and Report consumption and new requirements to the bosun

  • Two years’ experience on board a marine vessel, preferably a tugboat
  • Valid Seaman Book
  • Valid Seafarer Medical Certificate
Possession of STCW Certification (A-II/5)
  • Personal Survival Techniques (STCW A-VI/1-1)
  • Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (STCW A-VI/1-4)
  • Basic Safety Training (STCW A-VI/1 Manila)
  • Elementary First Aid (STCW A-VI/1-3)
  • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI/1-2)
